🔢 Why Are Numbers Special?
Imagine that numbers don’t just mean “how many”, but “what kind of force”. That the number 3 is not simply three items, but the principle of creation, synthesis and harmony. That 7 is not an arbitrary quantity, but the key to cosmic completion. This is precisely how the oldest civilizations — Egypt, Babylon, Greece, India — understood numbers.
For the modern world, a number is a quantity: neutral, abstract, a mathematical instrument. But for the Hermetic tradition, a number is a quality: a living archetype with its own energy, colour, sound and character.

The Initiations of Pythagoras
Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE) was initiated in the Egyptian mystery temples of Memphis and Thebes, studied with the Phoenicians and Babylonians, and possibly spent 22 years in Egyptian temples. His number doctrine is not abstract mathematics — it is initiatory knowledge, designed to reveal the structure of the cosmos to those who were ready to see.
When Pythagoras said that “all is number”, he did not mean that everything is a countable quantity. He meant that the proportions, rhythms and patterns that numbers describe form the invisible architecture upon which all of reality is built. Number as the blueprint of God.
📐 The Tetractys of Pythagoras
The Pythagorean school distinguished four fundamental number-principles: the Monad (1 — unity), the Dyad (2 — polarity), the Triad (3 — synthesis) and the Tetrad (4 — manifestation). Together they describe all of creation in four steps: point → line → plane → volume. In Lesson 2.2 we dive deep into each of these four building blocks.
The holiest symbol of the entire Pythagorean school was not an image of a god or a temple — it was a mathematical pattern: the Tetractys. Ten points, arranged in a triangle of four rows:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1: the return to unity. The number 10 is thus the completion of creation returning to its source. This is the cosmic cycle expressed in a single mathematical fact.
The Musical Intervals in the Tetractys
The Tetractys also contains the three perfect musical intervals that Pythagoras discovered:

The Pythagoreans swore an oath by the Tetractys: “By him who gave us the Tetractys, which contains the fount and root of the eternally flowing creation.” Music, mathematics, geometry and cosmology — all united in ten points.

☿ The Hermetic Vision of Numbers
The Hermetic tradition — the Corpus Hermeticum, the Kybalion, and the esoteric teachings of Thoth/Hermes — connects numbers directly with the cosmic principles that govern reality. Each of the seven Hermetic principles from the Kybalion has a profound numerical correspondence:
