The Pythagorean school taught four fundamental concepts that describe creation: Monad, Dyad, Triad, and Tetrad. From the indivisible point to three-dimensional volume — discover how creation unfolds in four steps.
📐 The Tetractys of Pythagoras
The Tetractys (Greek: tetraktys = fourness) is the most sacred symbol of the Pythagorean school. It is a triangular arrangement of ten points, distributed across four rows: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10. This simple pattern contains the key to the entire cosmic order.
Each row represents a dimension of reality:

The Tetractys and Music
Pythagoras discovered that the ratios within the Tetractys determine the fundamental musical intervals. Using the monochord — an instrument with a single string — he proved that harmony is mathematical:

The Oath upon the Tetractys
Pythagorean students swore their sacred oath upon the Tetractys: "By him who has transmitted to our race the Tetractys, the source and root of ever-flowing nature." This was their most sacred creed — proof that numbers govern reality.
🔵 The Monad — Number 1
The word Monad comes from the Greek monos, meaning "alone." The Monad is the absolute unity, the indivisible Source from which everything emerges. In Pythagorean philosophy, 1 is strictly speaking not a "number" — it is the principle that generates all numbers.
Geometrically: the Point (0D)
The Monad is the point — it has no length, no width, no height. It occupies no space, yet is the prerequisite for all space. Without the point, there can be no line, no plane, no volume. It is the potentiality of all forms, yet unmanifested.

Planet: the Sun
The central light that illuminates everything. Just as the Monad is the source of all numbers, the Sun is the source of all life in our solar system.
Principle: Origin
Self-sufficiency, creator, indivisible. The Monad needs nothing outside itself — it is simultaneously the beginning and the end.
In the Kabbalah, the Monad corresponds to Kether (the Crown), the first Sefirah at the top of the Tree of Life. In Hermeticism, it is the To Hen — the One from which multiplicity emanates. In Hinduism, it is Brahman, the absolute reality.
⚖️ The Dyad — Number 2
With the Dyad (from the Greek duo), the first division arises. Unity mirrors itself and thereby creates the Other. This is the moment of polarity — the emergence of opposites that together form a greater whole.
Geometrically: the Line (1D)
Two points connect and create a line. Thus the first dimension is born: length. The line has direction — there is now a "here" and a "there," a beginning and an end. The undivided space of the Monad is split.

Polarity as Creation
The Dyad is not a hostile opposition. The two poles complement each other — they are like two halves of a whole that becomes complete only through their cooperation. Without darkness no light, without silence no sound.
Cosmic Correspondence
Planet: the Moon
The Moon receives and reflects the light of the Sun. It is the mirror, the reflection — the perfect symbol of the Dyad.
Principle: Reflection
Polarity, relationship, reciprocity. The Dyad teaches us that nothing can exist on its own — everything is known through its opposite.

The Triad is the number of creation and synthesis. Where the Dyad divides, the Triad unites. Thesis and antithesis find their resolution in synthesis — the third element that transcends the opposites and creates something entirely new.
Geometrically: the Triangle (2D)
Three points form the triangle — the first closed figure in geometry. With the triangle, the plane (2D) is born: surface area. The triangle is also the strongest structure in nature and architecture — bridges, roofs, and crystal lattices are all based on triangular constructions.

Christianity
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — three aspects of the one God, indivisible yet distinct.
Egyptian

Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver), and Shiva (renewer) — the Trimurti that governs the cosmic cycle.
Alchemy

Cosmic Correspondence
The planet Jupiter embodies the Triad: expansion, wisdom, and the synthesis of opposites. In the Kabbalah, 3 corresponds to Binah (Understanding), the Great Mother who gives form to the unstructured potential of Chokmah (Wisdom).
Dialectics and Creation
The principle of thesis-antithesis-synthesis is not only philosophical but also biological: a father (thesis) and mother (antithesis) bring forth a child (synthesis) that is more than the sum of its parts. The Triad is the principle of emergence — the appearance of something fundamentally new.
🔲 The Tetrad — Number 4
The Tetrad represents complete manifestation in the physical world. With four points, the first three-dimensional body emerges: the tetrahedron. The number 4 is the number of the earth, matter, and stability.
Geometrically: Volume (3D)
Four points that do not lie in the same plane create the tetrahedron — the simplest three-dimensional body. With this, the complete spatial reality is born: length, width, and height. The square and the cross are the two-dimensional symbols of the Tetrad.

Saturn is the planet of structure, boundaries, and manifestation. Just as the Tetrad anchors creation in matter, Saturn bounds the cosmic order.
Principle: Manifestation
Stability, foundation, physical reality. The Tetrad is the anchor — the point where idea becomes matter and the invisible becomes visible.
In Freemasonry, the cube (an extension of the square) is considered the symbol of the perfected human — rough stone is worked into a perfect square block, ready to be placed in the temple.

Finding Trinities
- Find five triads (trinities) in your daily life. Think of three-part processes, three-fold unities, and trinitarian structures.
- Examples to get you started: past-present-future, body-soul-spirit, beginning-middle-end.
- For each triad, write down how the three elements relate to each other: which element is the thesis, which the antithesis, and which the synthesis?
- Do you notice a difference between triads that are complementary and triads that are hierarchical?
- Reflect: why does the human mind so readily think in threes?

- Close your eyes and visualize the Tetractys as ten points of light appearing in a triangular pattern.
- Begin at the top point (the Monad). Feel the unity, the silence, the undivided.
- Let two points appear (the Dyad). Feel the tension of polarity, the direction that emerges.
- Three points form a triangle (the Triad). Feel how creation arises, how something new appears.
- Four points complete the base (the Tetrad). Feel the solidity, the anchoring in matter.
- Hold the complete pattern and meditate on the return: 10 → 1+0 → 1. Everything returns to the One.
