The Greek mystery traditions had initiations lasting 40 days. In the Eleusinian Mysteries there was a preparatory period of forty days of fasting, meditation and ritual purification before the neophyte could undergo the great initiation. Egyptian mummification likewise lasted 40 days — the time needed for the soul to fully leave the body.
Astrologically, the number 40 is connected to the cycle of Jupiter opposite Saturn. The synodic conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn — the “Great Conjunction” — repeats roughly every 20 years, and after two such cycles (40 years) the pattern returns to a related point of the zodiac. This cosmic rhythm mirrors the earthly cycle of purification and renewal.

The number 108 is sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism — three traditions that consider this number a key to cosmic harmony. It appears everywhere in the spiritual practice of South and East Asia.
108 in the Spiritual Traditions
A Japamala, the Hindu and Buddhist rosary, always contains exactly 108 beads. The practitioner repeats a mantra 108 times as one complete cycle. There are 108 Upanishads — the core philosophical texts of Hinduism. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) there are 12 signs and 9 planets: 12 × 9 = 108. The Sanskrit alphabet has 54 letters, each with a masculine and feminine aspect: 54 × 2 = 108.
In Buddhism there are 108 earthly desires (kleshas) that a person must overcome to achieve enlightenment. The great bronze Buddha of Kamakura in Japan is surrounded by 108 lotus petals. On New Year’s Eve, Japanese Buddhist temples ring their bells exactly 108 times to usher in the new year.
The Scientific Dimension of 108
What makes 108 truly remarkable is the astronomical precision hidden behind it:
The distance from Earth to the Sun is approximately 108 times the diameter of the Sun. And the distance from Earth to the Moon is approximately 108 times the diameter of the Moon. Moreover, the diameter of the Sun itself is approximately 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
These ratios are not exact but remarkably accurate — accurate enough to wonder how the Vedic sages, thousands of years ago, chose this number as sacred. Was it knowledge, intuition or both?
The Astronomical Precision of Vedic Knowledge
The Vedic tradition knew the number 108 as sacred long before modern astronomy could measure the Earth-Sun or Earth-Moon distance. The fact that 108 × solar diameter ≈ Earth-Sun distance and 108 × lunar diameter ≈ Earth-Moon distance suggests a form of cosmic knowledge that our current history of science cannot fully explain. This is the Hermetic principle in action: the microcosm (number) mirrors the macrocosm (universe).

666 is the total sum of the magic square of the Sun (6×6, numbers 1–36). Each row, column and diagonal adds up to 111. The Sun represents the Higher Self, consciousness and enlightenment in the Hermetic tradition.
Gematria: Neron Kaisar
In Greek isopsephy (number-letter system), “Neron Kaisar” — the Roman emperor Nero — equals 666. The Book of Revelation was probably encrypted political criticism, not cosmic prophecy.
Kabbalistic: Sorat
In the Kabbalistic tradition, 666 refers to Sorat, the “counter-force of the Sun” — not the devil, but the force that binds consciousness to matter and prevents humans from recognizing their higher nature.
Threefold Perfection
In the Pythagorean tradition, 6 is the first perfect number (1+2+3=6). Threefold 6 (666) symbolizes perfect manifestation in matter — the complete expression of the divine on the physical plane.

The Sun takes 666 years to traverse one degree of precession. The total precession cycle of 25,920 years divided by 360 degrees = 72 years per degree. But calculated from the solar radius: 25,920 / 38.88 ≈ 666.

In the Book of Revelation (7:4), 144,000 chosen ones are sealed — 12,000 from each of the twelve tribes of Israel. This number in the esoteric tradition is not a literal count of people, but a symbol of cosmic completion.
The Mathematical Structure
144 = 12 × 12, the square of the zodiacal number. Twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve apostles, twelve tribes — squaring 12 symbolizes the complete realization of the cosmic plan at every level. 144,000 = 144 × 1,000, where 1,000 stands for “fullness” or “divine multiplication.”
Remarkably: 144 is also a Fibonacci number — the twelfth in the sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144). It is the only Fibonacci number that is a perfect square of another significant number (12²). This connects the Fibonacci spiral with the zodiacal structure of the universe.
