âš–ī¸ MODULE 7 — THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES
Lesson 7.5

The Principle of Rhythm: "Everything Flows"

The fifth Hermetic principle describes the eternal oscillation — the tides of the universe. From Sumerian stellar cycles to Indian Yugas and Heraclitus' Panta Rhei.

⏱ 12 min reading timeđŸŽ¯ Advanced beginnerâš–ī¸ The Seven Principles

The fifth principle builds on polarity: between the two poles, everything swings back and forth. There is always a rhythm — a tide of rise and fall, of action and rest, of inhalation and exhalation.

🌊 The Universal Oscillation

"Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum swing manifests in everything."

— The Kybalion

Sumeria: Astronomical Cycles

The Sumerians were the first great astronomers. They observed and documented the cycles of the stars, the moon, the sun and the planets with astonishing precision. Their entire civilization was built on the principle of cosmic rhythms — the seasons, the lunar phases, the planetary revolutions.

Egypt: The Nile Rhythm

The Nile was the beating heart of Egypt — and its annual flooding was the most visible example of cosmic rhythm. Three seasons: the flood (Akhet), the sowing (Peret), the harvest (Shemu). This cyclical pattern was projected onto the cosmic order: everything has its season, everything has its rhythm.

India: Samsara and the Yugas

Samsara — the cycle of birth, death and rebirth — is rhythm at the individual level. The Yugas are rhythm at the cosmic level: four world ages (Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali) that repeat endlessly, each with their own character of rise and fall.

Greece: Panta Rhei

Heraclitus: "Panta Rhei" — everything flows. The river flows, the seasons change, civilizations rise and fall. Everything moves in rhythms. The Stoics adopted this with their concept of Eternal Recurrence — the universe that cyclically renews itself.

❓

In which phase of which rhythm do you find yourself now — rising or falling? And how can you consciously use that rather than fighting against it?

🌙 Contemplation / Exercise

Rhythm Journal (10 minutes)

Write down the cycles in your life. Which rhythms do you recognize?

Your energy level through the day. Your motivation through the week. Your creativity through the year. Your relationships through the years. For each rhythm, write down: which phase am I in now? Rising or falling? And how can I move with it instead of fighting against it?

The master of the fifth principle does not fight the tide — he learns to surf it.
